Saint Catherine and Saint Cornelius Church (Diegem)

The Saint Catherine and Saint Cornelius Church is a remarkable Late Gothic church located in the Belgian district of Diegem. Since the Middle Ages, it has been an important pilgrimage site, primarily dedicated to the veneration of Saint Cornelius, a 3rd-century pope and martyr. As the first patron saint of the parish, he was invoked to protect or heal the faithful from ailments such as gout, epilepsy, convulsions, and whooping cough.

From 1615 onward, Saint Catherine of Alexandria gradually replaced Saint Cornelius as the parish’s patron saint. This change may have been influenced by Catherine Oudart, a local noblewoman who died in 1629. Despite this transition, devotion to Saint Cornelius remained strong, and from 1751, he was once again mentioned alongside Saint Catherine as co-patron saint.

War and Reconstruction

During the Second World War, the tower was completely dismantled in 1943 by order of the German occupying forces, as it obstructed military aircraft taking off from Zaventem Airport. The dismantling was carried out stone by stone, allowing for later reconstruction.

The people of Diegem had to wait eight years before celebrating the official reconstruction of the spire on 28 October 1951. The rebuilding was carried out under the supervision of architect F. De Groodt.

Interior and Pilgrimage Traditions

For centuries, the church has attracted large numbers of pilgrims. Their offerings were collected in an imposing oak donation chest, roughly hewn and secured with three heavy padlocks, large enough to hold substantial contributions.

Protected Heritage

The Late Gothic Saint Catherine and Saint Cornelius Church, with its medieval frescoes, has been listed as a protected monument since 1938. To this day, it remains a place of reflection, historical memory, and architectural heritage—and is well worth a careful visit.
